Rising gas prices have translated into rising food prices.  Have you seen the the price of  milk lately? We have been taking to shopping at grocery stores that offer a little lower prices.  One such store we started to shop at is  ALDI...

These stores are popping up all over the United States and likely are benefiting from the high gas prices that are making people look for cheaper groceries. While wandering down the aisle the other day at ALDI I came across something interesting in the freezer section.

It was a package that had 4 frozen turkey fillet mignon that were wrapped in bacon. Normally, I do not buy pre-prepared meats like this, but it was just a few days after my encounter with the turkey gang, and I had a serious craving for some turkey. Also, even though we both like to cook, there are days when we take it easy in the kitchen. I plopped the package into the shopping cart.

This was a pure impulse purchase.  This is a habit that prevails for many at ALDI.  There is so much prepared frozen food and junk food knick knacks that I almost always end up with one or two extra items in my shopping cart. I also notice a lot of other people picking stuff up and staring at the box for a long time.  Deciding whether or not they should buy.  Impulse buyers.

One thing about the shopping carts at ALDI that is funny.  You have to drop a quarter in a slot to get yourself a cart.  When you are done shopping, you return the cart to the corral area, replace the lock, and get your quarter back.  If you plan to shop their make sure you bring a quarter! We always double check before we go out the door. Talk about no frills shopping!

We decided to make turkey fillet mignon with a some potato wedges and a light salad.  It was a real simple meal, but they came out fantastic. They were also a hit with the kids.

We cut washed red potatoes, drizzled a little olive oil on them with salt and pepper and baked them in the oven at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes. Very simple. If you twice bake these as leftovers the next day and dip them in ketchup, they are really good! Like giant french fries.

I cooked the turkey on the grill,  There are a good set instructions and I followed them pretty closely.  The fillet mignon are raw, and there is a little pop-out thermostat in each that tells you when they reach the desired temperature.  I heated up the grill as high it would go and got it really hot.  Once it was up around 500 degrees, I placed the turkey on the grill grate, turned the grill  heat down to just a tad higher than its lowest setting and closed the lid.  I let them set for about ten to fifteen minutes on low heat.  Then I flipped them and let them cook for another 10 minutes.  The little thermostat popped out on each filet at about the same time.  I let them stay on the grill on low heat just to make sure they were cooked through. You never can be too careful when cooking turkey. I noted that on the ingredients list that they were injected with a solution, so I was not too concerned about them drying out.

If you want nice grill marks, just set them on the gril and leave them there.  I have seen too many people fiddle with their grill meats moving them this way and that.  Drives me crazy.  Just leave it there!  We will be buying these again these again!

Tidbits

Thinking of grilling skewered beef? You can tenderize the meat by sprinkling a dusting of baking soda over the meat and mix it in with the marinade. Do this just a few minutes before you start to grill.  You meat will come out super tender, just like in the restaurant!
