What does 'kick the fridge' mean? It is a term that's been around our family for some time. I guess my dad said it often, when it meant we were having 'left overs' for dinner. It's opening the refrigerator door (or pantry), shaking it around a little bit, finding the ingredients you have on hand, and then throwing them together into some sort of tasty dish. After I got out on my own and got married, my wife and I picked up on the line. I've also heard the term used in different circles. We have 'kicked the fridge' on so many occasions and have come up with some pretty good dinners. In fact, sometimes when we are thinking of going out to a restaurant for a sit-down dinner, we'll say, "lets kick the fridge...and see what falls out instead". We'll stay home, and what we make at homes ends up being much better than anything we would have ordered at a restaurant. Certainly better than paying the bill at the end of evening!
We like to watch the Food Network for hours on end. My favorite is anything with Bobby Flay. My wife is more partial to Martin Yan of Yan Can Cook who appears on the American Public Television Network.
My wife and I enjoy cooking very much. We think we make just as good dishes, or even better than you get at the most expensive places. We would like to own a restaurant someday but, there is a certain amount of risk in starting up a restaurant (9 in 10 new start-ups fail) and the hours are way to long. Plus, we have no formal training (no chef school for us!), and I already have a 'real' job that I also happen to enjoy that already makes good money for us.
We decided to create this little forum instead to take our hobby online, and maybe build it into something a little more. At some point we hope to have others share in their experiences in the kitchens. We will show some of the dishes we prepare when we cook, and we will list the recipes and techniques that we used with our cooking tips. Most of the recipes come from us and we create them on the fly, but we occasionally "steal" something from the web and incorporate into our meal somehow or another. It is probably the next best thing to owning a restaurant, we will be the chefs, customers, and we will provide the 'review' of our dish (good or bad).
If you want to have a taste for yourself, you will just have to kick your own fridge, and see what falls out!
